Meet the Team: Ben, our Maker
This month I’d like to introduce you to a very special person indeed – my big brother Ben, and the maker behind our hand-crafted mobiles. He is also an award-winning designer-maker, and Founder of hand&machine.
hand&machine is a York-based workshop specialising in designing and making high-quality bespoke furniture. Set up by Ben in 2014, hand&machine are a company addicted to detail; every piece that leaves the workshop has been lavished with time and attention from start to finish, and is as unique as the person it’s made for.
“At the core of hand&machine is the belief in making the very best furniture in an honest and committed fashion, every time.”
“We never compromise on quality. Whether it’s a small, one-off item or a full interior, every piece is designed and crafted to the highest standard in our workshop on the outskirts of York.”
“For me, designing and making bespoke furniture is about creating something that will surprise and excite our clients – pieces that surpass expectations and bring pleasure to the people who own them.”
Ben learnt his craft at the prestigious Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford, before working as a bespoke cabinet-maker for a company in London. During this time, he won numerous awards including the Gordon Russell Award for craftsmanship and the Kinnarps Award for furniture design. He moved back to his hometown of York to set up hand&machine in 2014.
Ben carefully hand crafts each and every NURTURE mobile out of birch, before they are packaged by myself in our London studio. A brother and sister double act.
